A 24-year-old woman was detained for wearing indecent clothing and given a two-year prison term.

International attention has been drawn to the Rwandan woman who was sentenced to two years in prison for indecent dressing.
On August 9, 2022, Mugabekazi Lilliane, 24, was detained and charged with public obscenity after attending a concert by well-known French artist Tayc in Kigali while dressed provocatively.

She was detained while awaiting her fate in court and then arrested.

Following her detention, Faustin Nkusi, a spokeswoman for the prosecution, informed AFP that “she is accused of having committed public indecency.”

Although the detention sparked protests, Rwandan government officials, including former justice minister Johnston Busingye, supported it.

A Rwandan court condemned Lilliane to two years in prison on Thursday, August 18.
