Kaduna State reports 32,297 cases of tuberculosis In 2023

According to the Kaduna State Government, 32,297 cases of tuberculosis were found in the state in 2023; however, the disease’s detection rate has since improved, and the risk of transmission has decreased.

During the news conference held in Kaduna on Thursday to commemorate World Tuberculosis Day, State Commissioner for Health Umma Kaltume-Ahmed gave remarks.

According to her, the state’s case count for tuberculosis has increased, rising from 21,557 in 2022 to 32,297 in 2023. “This amounts to a 49.8% rise in comparison to 2022.” This case detection rate is equivalent to 159% of the state’s target for TB case detection.

According to her, the development indicates that the State TB program is receiving better support from the State Government and development partners, as evidenced by the notable improvement in case finding compared to the 53% obtained in 2022.

According to the Commissioner, the theme of 2024 World TB Day is “Yes, We Can End TB,” and the slogan is “No Gree For TB, Check Am O.” This is a response to the pledge made by world leaders during the UN high-level meeting on TB in New York four years ago to support the goal of ending the TB epidemic by 2030 by financing research sustainably, increasing access to prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, and eradicating stigma and discrimination against those who are affected by TB.

The Commissioner states that tuberculosis continues to be one of the most deadly infectious diseases in the world. Every day, tuberculosis (TB) claims the lives of more than 4,100 people and infects almost 28,000 more with the avoidable and treatable illness.

Since 2000, an estimated 66 million lives have been spared thanks to global efforts to combat tuberculosis. Nonetheless, years of progress in the fight to end tuberculosis have been undone by the COVID-19 pandemic. 2020 saw an increase in TB deaths for the first time in more than ten years.
