When their vehicle struck a landmine in an area under lawlessness where jihadist groups such as Nigeria’s Boko Haram and an Islamic State offshoot are active, seven Chadian soldiers lost their lives.

About 200 kilometers (125 miles) from the capital, N’Djamena, in the unrest-plagued Lake Chad region, Tchoukou Telia, suffered multiple other casualties from Monday’s explosion, according to President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno.

“Their vehicle struck a mine while they were patrolling,” he said. “Seven soldiers were killed and several others injured”.

Deby Itno came to power after his father, Idriss Deby Itno, who ruled Chad with an iron grip for over 30 years, passed away in 2021 while battling rebels, according to an AFP report published on Tuesday.

He is running for president on May 6th, but he won’t have any serious competition because this past weekend, officials disqualified ten candidates, including two ardent opponents of the military government.

In the Lake Chad region, the Chadian army frequently kills or captures jihadists, but it also experiences losses, albeit these have significantly decreased in the last year.

Chad, Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon, and Lake Chad are all bordered by this large body of water and marshland.

Both the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram fighters have frequently attacked it.
