Peter Obi Explains Absence from Labour Party Convention

The Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate for 2023, Peter Obi, has provided insight into why he chose not to attend the national convention of the party in Anambra State.

Speaking on Friday at an X-Space session for Nigerians organized by Parallel Facts, Obi stated that the main cause of his absence was the party leadership’s inability to carry out in-depth consultations with important stakeholders.

The longtime LP member stressed the value of extensive party consultation before taking on big projects like a national convention.

Obi contends that a lack of extensive consultations compromises the validity and potency of party decisions.

Obi declared, “We did not promise to build a New Labour Party; we promised to build Nigeria.”

Internal LP tensions surround Obi’s comments, as the Julius Abure-led leadership is being criticized for allegedly disregarding inclusive decision-making procedures.

Apart from addressing party issues, Obi expressed his endorsement of the creation of a framework for the “Obidient” movement, a confederation of his adherents that promotes progressive change and political reform.

“Movements form themselves into blocs and are part of the political process; this is standard practice worldwide,” said Obi.
