They stressed how important Kanu’s release is to the South-East region’s security and economic well-being.

Kanu’s request for release has been made soon after a Federal High Court in Abuja denied his request for bail. During the episcopal ordination of the Auxiliary Bishop of Orlu Diocese in Imo State, Most Reverend Lucius Ugorji, the President of the CBCN, made this appeal.

The South-East’s level of insecurity has increased as a result of Kanu’s prolonged detention, according to Most Rev. Ugorji, and the Monday sit-at-home protests have had a detrimental effect on the local economy.

Kanu was denied bail by Federal High Court in Abuja Judge Binta Nyako, who also ordered an expedited trial for the case. After being detained in June 2021, Kanu has been under the care of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu’s attorney, expressed displeasure with the decision, referencing access issues and accusing the DSS of treating their client unfairly.
