Court rejects Nnamdi Kanu’s fresh request for bail

On Tuesday, the Federal High Court in Abuja denied the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, or IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu new request to be released on bail while the Federal Government’s disloyal criminal charge against him was being considered.

Kanu requested bail from the court in an application he filed on February 5 through the legal team led by Mr. Alloy Ejimakor, citing his failing health as evidence.

Instead, an accelerated hearing of the seven-count charge against him by FG was ordered by trial Justice Binta Nyako.

Ejimakor maintained that the federal government-owned hospital had verified the IPOB leader’s serious medical condition, so there was no question about it.

In particular, he revealed that a battery of examinations carried out on Kanu revealed acute heart disease and hypertension.

We respectfully submit that the defendant’s health issue is self-evident and continues even with the care provided by the detaining authorities,” Ejimako continued.

He insisted that Kanu’s life was in danger as long as he was held by the Department of State Services (DSS) and that releasing the prisoner on bond would allow him to adequately prepare his defense against the charges against him.

Furthermore, Ejimakor claimed that the government, which he claimed had altered the charge multiple times, was to blame for the apparent delay in the case’s prosecution.

In response to the court’s observation that Kanu had previously skipped bail, Ejimakor contended that the development had reached academic status in light of the conclusions and rulings of other courts on the matter.

Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, the legal counsel for FG, opposed the bail request because there was no assurance Kanu would turn himself in for trial after getting out of custody.
